The Ferris hockey team tied the school record for the best home start with an 11–0 record

With a sweep of Western Michigan, Ferris is 11−0−0 at home this sea­son, tying the school record for the best home start ever and ranked 11th in the country.

The Bulldogs, nation­ally ranked 11th by uscho​.com, improved to 8−2−2−2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and 13−3−2 over­all. Ferris remains third in the con­fer­ence stand­ings, just one point behind Michigan State and six points behind first-place Miami.

The Bulldog hockey team will look to make his­tory on Jan. 15 as the No. 1-ranked Miami RedHawks visit Big Rapids. Ferris defeated Miami in con­sec­u­tive shootouts ear­lier this sea­son in Oxford, Ohio.

Senior left wing Blair Riley said the teams’ defense, along with a strong power play and penalty kill, are big rea­sons why the Bulldogs have been suc­cess­ful this sea­son. Continue Reading…

 

No. 13 FSU Continues Dominance

“I think the team has done a great job of con­tin­u­ing to come to the rink and work­ing hard every day and under­stand­ing what it takes for our team to keep win­ning,” said Wysopal.

Freshman for­ward Matthew Kirzinger scored a short­handed goal with just over six min­utes remain­ing in the first period. Senior for­ward Blair Riley added an empty-net goal with 32 sec­onds remain­ing in the game to ice the vic­tory for Ferris. The Bulldogs out­shot the Mavericks 34–28 and both teams went 0 for 5 on the power play.

Three goals in a five-minute span in the sec­ond period led to a 3–1 vic­tory on Saturday as Ferris com­pleted its sweep of the Mavericks.

Sophomore cen­ter Jordie Johnston opened the scor­ing with his first goal of the sea­son four min­utes, 43 sec­onds into the sec­ond period. Wysopal and senior cap­tain Cody Chupp added power play goals 1:32 apart to the team a 3–0 lead at the mid­way point of the game. The Ferris men’s bas­ket­ball team is 3–0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) for the first time in over 12 years.

After the strong home stand, Ferris now stands at 3–3 over­all in the sea­son fol­low­ing two home vic­to­ries against Ashland and Tiffin over the weekend.

Ferris car­ried a post-win hang­over into the Ashland game and the team got off to a slow start. The Eagles came out shoot­ing 53.6 per­cent in the first half to take a 37–30 lead into halftime.

Halftime proved to be a wake-up call for the Bulldogs, as the team came out fir­ing. Ferris went on a 26–8 run in the first nine min­utes of the half and shot 64.5 per­cent from the field in the sec­ond half.

The Bulldogs also played strong on defense in the sec­ond half, where the team forced 12 turnovers. The strong play on both sides of the ball allowed Ferris to pull away for an 82–72 victory.

Junior forward/center Justin Keenan led the way for Ferris with a game high 21 points, while senior guard Austin Randel posted 16 points along with four steals. Junior guard Darien Gay chipped in a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Continue Reading…

 

Moving on Up

The Ferris hockey team is ranked 13th in the nation after two vic­to­ries this weekend

The Ferris State hockey team is ranked 13th in the nation after a sweep of the then No. 18 nation­ally ranked Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks.

The team is unbeaten in its pre­vi­ous eight games, includ­ing two shootout vic­to­ries over No. 1 Miami University. The Bulldogs improved to 10−0−0 at home this sea­son with its fifth con­sec­u­tive sweep at Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs are 11−3−2 over­all this sea­son and 6−2−2−2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Ferris earned six points in the con­fer­ence over the week­end is now third in the CCHA stand­ings with 22 points.

Ferris defeated Nebraska-Omaha shut out Nebraska-Omaha 2–0 on Friday night. Sophomore goalie Taylor Nelson recorded his first shutout of the sea­son for the Bulldogs as he saved all 28 shots he faced. Sophomore defense­man Brett Wysopal said the team con­tin­ues to play hard each day.

Bulldogs Score First Conference Victory

The women’s bas­ket­ball team split its two home games this weekend

The Ferris women’s bas­ket­ball team won their first con­fer­ence game on Thursday with a 75–67 vic­tory over the Ashland Eagles.

Junior guard Becci Houdek led all scor­ers with 20 points and five assists. Junior for­ward Tiara Adams recorded a double-double with 19 points, 14 of which came in the sec­ond half, and 10 rebounds.

As a team, the Bulldogs shot 46.7 per­cent from the court, includ­ing 36.8 per­cent from the three-point line. Ferris had 22 second-chance points and held the Eagles to only 10. Sophomore guard/forward Kelsey DeNoyelles said the team’s pri­mary focus has been on defense and rebounding.

“We never back down or hang our heads,” said DeNoyelles.

The Bulldogs took a 20–19 lead with eight min­utes left in the first half and never trailed the rest of the way. The game was close through­out, how­ever, as the largest lead for either team was just eight points. Head coach Tracey Dorow said the team sent a new mes­sage to other teams. Continue Reading…

 

Swapping a Volleyball for a Basketball

For the last two years, sopho­more Ashley Huntey has played vol­ley­ball at Ferris and now she is hit­ting the hardwood.

After help­ing the Ferris vol­ley­ball team reach the NCAA Division II tour­na­ment, Huntey has her sights on help­ing turn around the women’s bas­ket­ball team, which went 13–15 last season.

Huntey, a Stanwood native, played vol­ley­ball and bas­ket­ball all four years of high school and played soft­ball in her junior year at Morley-Stanwood High School. In vol­ley­ball, she attained all-state hon­ors all four years, was named the Big Rapids Pioneer Dream Team Player of the Year in her final two sea­sons, and helped lead her high school to its first state cham­pi­onship in 2007.

In bas­ket­ball, Huntey was named an all-area per­former from 2004–2006 and was named to the all-state team in 2006.

Since she played mul­ti­ple sports through­out high school, Huntey said it felt strange to play only vol­ley­ball in her first year at Ferris. Continue Reading…

Ferris adds three for­wards to 2010–2011 recruit­ing class

Three New Forwards

The Bulldog hockey team added three signees to the 2010–2011 recruit­ing class.

Ferris inked three for­wards dur­ing November’s early sign­ing period, giv­ing the Bulldogs a quick start in the recruit­ing process. The Bulldogs focused on recruit­ing for­wards since sev­eral seniors at the posi­tion will be grad­u­at­ing this year.

One of the top signees is Andy Huff, a native of Howell, who is cur­rently play­ing for the Traverse City North Stars of the North American Hockey League (NAHL).

Huff was a high-profile recruit, hav­ing his name on the NHL’s watch­list for the 2010 entry draft. Huff is also tied for 12th among the NAHL’s lead­ing point scor­ers and is the 11th lead­ing scorer among for­wards in the league.

Joining Huff will be fel­low NAHL for­ward Justin DeMartino, who is cur­rently a mem­ber of the Springfield (Ill.) Jr. Blues. DeMartino comes to the Ferris pro­gram with a strong back­ground, as he posted a team-best tying 84 points while play­ing for the Detroit Little Caesars last sea­son. DeMartino was also part of the Little Caesars Midget Minor team that won the 2008 USA Hockey Under-16 National Championship.

Rounding out the recent signees is Cory Kane, who is play­ing for the Vernon (British Columbia) Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). Kane is cur­rently ranked at 27 on the BCHL’s scor­ing lead­ers chart for the 2009–2010 sea­son. Kane put up 54 over­all points along with 24 goals and 30 assist in the 2008–2009 season.

 

Bulldogs Ranked 17th Nationally

The Ferris State hockey team is ranked 17th in the nation accord­ing to U.S. College Hockey Online.

The Bulldogs are 8–0 at home this sea­son and it marks the best home start in school his­tory. Ferris has outscored its oppo­nents 39–16 in eight home con­tests this season.

The team is 9−3−2 over­all and 4−2−2−2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The team is cur­rently fifth over­all in the CCHA with 16 points. Ferris is unbeaten in its last six con­tests and has not lost since Oct. 31. Junior defense­man Zach Redmond said every­one on the team is play­ing well together.

“All four of our lines are con­tribut­ing at dif­fer­ent times and I think every­one knows their role,” said Redmond.

The Bulldogs swept Ohio State in its last con­tests. In the first game, Ferris scored nearly at will en route to an 8–1 vic­tory. The team scored three goals in just three min­utes and 44 sec­onds to take a quick 3–0 lead. Continue Reading…

 

Women’s CC 11th Nationally

The Ferris State women’s cross coun­try team placed 11th at the national meet

womensccThe Ferris State women’s cross coun­try team fin­ished 11th at the 2009 NCAA-II National Championships, tying the second-highest result in school history.

Junior Tina Muir led the Bulldogs with a time of 21 min­utes and 11 sec­onds, which was good enough for a 12th-place fin­ish. She earned All-American hon­ors for the sec­ond con­sec­u­tive sea­son. Muir also fin­ished 12th at the cham­pi­onship meet last sea­son. Continue Reading…
