by Christa Cwiek, Copy Editor

Free night of Salsa lessons being provided by campus organization

Extra Spicy Salsa!Mujeres Triunfando, a new registered student organization (RSO) on campus, is offering an evening of free Salsa dancing lessons.

Although “Mujeres Triunfando” translates to “women prevailing,” Lissette Isabel, president of the RSO, explains that the group is “open to anyone that would like to promote women empowerment and Latin awareness.”

Salsa dancing has been described as a dance of intimate passion and addiction. The typical music for Salsa is up-tempo Latin music. Salsa music typically ranges from 180 to 210 beats per minute; this is about twice the tempo of the Rumba.

Cuba is credited for creating the Salsa style of dance; however, New York created the term “Salsa”. Salsa is a combination of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. Continue Reading…

The Last Minute Holiday Gift Guide

by Kelsey A. Schnell, Editor in Chief

For Him

xmasgift-001He’s not as hard to buy for as you might think. Just simplify what it is he likes, being comfortable, hanging out and watching movies.

Awesome socks. I don’t mean the white socks that come in packs of 12. I am talking about knit, wool, patterned. It doesn’t sound like a great gift, but any guy worth his salt is worth a pair of great socks. Don’t be surprised if the cost is in the double digits.

Flask. Guys secretly dream of being in a situation where they need a flask. Trapped in an elevator, on the roof of a sky scraper, on the side of a mountain. And to go along with that flask, a fancy bottle of alcohol to put in it, something above $20 is preferable for the occasion.

Hammock. Will he try to set it up inside? Maybe. Will both of you enjoy it? Totally.

If all else fails, Caddyshack, Animal House or Dumb and Dumber on DVD. Continue Reading…

The Rankin Art Gallery will be featuring the Mixed Media Installation “Dwelling” for the first half of December.

Ted Evans is the creator of the work being featured in the gallery. He is from Vancouver, British Colombia and moved to Michigan to become the Director for Artworks in downtown Big Rapids. He is currently a full time studio artist.

Evans received his bachelors degree in fine arts at the Emily Carr Institute of Fine Art and Design. He went on to attend the University of Windsor, Ontario where he earned his masters degree in fine art.

Carrie Weis, Rankin Art Gallery Director, said, “Ted is a conceptual artist and his work addresses the idea of ‘dwelling,’ a state of being or a location to be lived in and observed.” Continue Reading…

Artists Seek New Audiences Around Holiday Season

by Kelsey A. Schnell, Editor in Chief

Releasing albums with a mix of old and new songs, performers look to change their style for the holidays

holidayalbumsWhen “Sleigh Bells” starts playing, Nick Maddox feels a little more in the holiday spirit.

Maddox, a junior in the mechanical engineering program, performed the piece in high school and has loved it ever since. Some artists are looking to put their own mark on holiday favorites as they perform new versions of old songs and flood the market place.

Bob Dylan released a Christmas album titled, “Christmas in the Heart” and has pledged proceeds from the album to the Feed America charity.

Both the Jackson Five’s album, “Ultimate Christmas Collection” and Ray Charles’ “The Spirit of Christmas” have been reissued, remastered and made available in time for the season. Continue Reading…

The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which came out in theatres on Nov. 20, was much improved over the original.

The new director, Chris Weitz, took this movie to a new level, with improved color, acting, visual effects, and much more energy than the first movie.

As Bella Swan, played by Kristin Stewart, describes her pain as, “having a hole in my chest,” Kristen does an excellent job at depicting this image with screams at night. Continue Reading…

J. Ventura’s Best Role: Himself

Neal Justin, MCT

Jesse Ventura’s most glaring flaws self-absorption, paranoia, stubbornness serve him to near-perfection in his latest and most promising TV project, “Conspiracy Theory,” premiering Wednesday on cable’s TruTV.

His other small-screen efforts, as a talk-show host and a sports commentator for the short-lived XFL football league, forced the former Minnesota governor to stray from his favorite subject: himself. Not this time. The new series may promise to be about government and corporate coverups, but it’s really about Ventura playing tough-talking detective a role that fits like a snug fedora. Magic Show Casts Spell on Students

Magician Norman Ng performed for a large student audience on Nov. 19 at Williams Auditorium.

Ng, who performed earlier in the day at the Rock Cafe, performed many tricks that got the audience of all ages involved.

After he performed his first trick of turning paper into money, he gave the money away to a student.

He also read a student’s mind. He drew a picture of what the student was thinking, which was a bowling ball, and dropped it from the pad of paper. He got a different student to read a mind as well. Continue Reading…
